A beautiful Thai island in the Andaman Sea. Koh Bulon-Lae is one of the islands of the Petra National Park archipelago. It is situated off western Thailand’s southernmost province, Satun. Koh Bulon-Lae offers an untouched slice of paradise, where natural beauty, rich ecosystems, and local culture create an unforgettable experience for every traveler.
Local Culture: The Chao Lae Community
Koh Bulon-Lae is home to a small fishing village of about 100 Chao Lae people, or Sea Gypsies, who have lived harmoniously with the ocean for generations.
Their village is located at Panka Bay, on the west side of the island, just a 15-minute walk from The Pansand Resort. The trail crosses the island’s ancient forest and passes through lush, untouched vegetation.
Mango Bay, on the island’s southern side, can also be reached by a short walk through the forest. Along the way, rubber trees are cultivated for latex, while the Chao Lae living at Mango Bay traditionally fish for squid.
Local Shops & Island Adventures
Several small shops near The Pansand Resort sell basic necessities and supplies, including hammocks and fresh fruit. Near the shops is the island’s public school, attended by around 35 children from the village.
To experience the island from the sea, longtail boat excursions can be arranged. From the water, both Bat Cave and Nose Cave can be explored.
Flora & Fauna
Exploring the flora and fauna of the island introduces visitors to one of the oldest ecosystems in the world. The birds, including many migrating species, are often easier to hear than to see, while sightings of larger birds are common across the island.
Hornbills soar above as eagles patrol the surrounding skies. Away from the occasional sound of longtail boats, birds, reptiles, mammals, insects and many other island creatures become part of the peaceful rhythm of Koh Bulon-Lae.
